A UX/UR Consultant in my shoes, by Joanne Petrillo

How would you describe your role?

I work within user experience and user research. Since I joined Triad in January 2023, I have worked on the discovery phase of three separate projects. By their nature, discovery projects are research heavy, so a lot of what I have done has been research based; trying to ensure that we understand the challenges faced by users so that we can create the right solutions. I’ll be moving on to designing and prototyping outputs soon, as my current project is about to go into Alpha phase.

What do you most enjoy about your role?

I love the challenge, and the variety. But if I had to pick one thing then I’d say that the whole ‘people first’ approach is really important to me. People use the end products we make, so it feels right to ensure that they benefit from it. It’s an important balance, ensuring that people needs + business needs are met so that the end product solves the problem holistically. I enjoy the innovative approaches that you can take in design, thinking of a problem in a new way and different approaches you can take in solving a problem.

When it comes to work, what are the non-negotiable behaviours that you ask for from your colleagues?

Honesty and transparency – You can’t have trust without honesty and transparency and it’s important to me that I am trusted and can trust. So that’s non-negotiable.

Kindness, compassion and empathy – I see this everywhere in the Triad culture. People are positive and willing to engage in a way that I haven’t experienced in other environments. I think that having a flat hierarchy helps to enable these behaviours.

If the above are in place, then you can fully engage in your work. A psychologically safe environment is important in helping me reach my full potential.

What’s your superpower?

Hmmm. Well I am not sure that it is a superpower, but I really like working with people! I’m a critical thinker, and  I am motivated in this job by the opportunity to help improve people’s experience. I like understanding the reasoning behind why things are designed the way that they are, and being able to empathise with users.

Marketing spin aside, what do you think makes Triad different from other IT Consultancies?

Triad is the first IT consultancy that I have worked for. I really appreciate the flat hierarchy. Everyone is very approachable and it’s easy to reach out to and interact with senior staff.
